LabRP

Psychosocial Rehabilitation Laboratory

Established in 2008, the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Laboratory (LabRP) is a research unit of the Center for Rehabilitation Research (CIR) at the School of Health of the Polytechnic University of Porto (P.PORTO), Portugal. The laboratory is located in the city of Porto.

It is a space for intervention, research, education and training, dedicated to promoting functionality, social inclusion and quality of life for people with experience of mental illness or in situations of social exclusion.

From the outset, its mission has been to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of neuropsychiatric disorders. Today, these disorders represent a significant public health challenge, with high prevalence rates both in Portugal and across the European Union.

It is essential to have dedicated research institutions that not only investigate these conditions but also pioneer the development of innovative technologies and approaches. Such efforts are vital to enhancing rehabilitation processes and promoting the social integration of individuals living with neuropsychiatric disorders.

Mission

To lead the future of Digital Mental Health and Psychosocial Rehabilitation through excellence in research, innovation, education, and societal impact. Committed to advancing transformative technologies and evidence-based interventions, the laboratory promotes mental health, recovery, participation, and human flourishing across diverse populations and settings. By bridging science, technology, and care, it develops innovative solutions that improve lives, reduce inequalities, and contribute to the transformation of person-centered, inclusive, and resilient healthcare systems.

Vision

To shape the future of Mental Health and Psychosocial Rehabilitation through pioneering research, transformative technologies, and innovation with societal impact. Recognized as a benchmark for excellence in Digital Mental Health, the laboratory aspires to advance knowledge, inspire new models of care, and contribute to a world where technology empowers recovery, inclusion, well-being, and human potential.

Scientific Positioning

The Psychosocial Rehabilitation Laboratory (LabRP) is a multidisciplinary research and innovation hub dedicated to advancing Digital Mental Health and Psychosocial Rehabilitation. Positioned at the convergence of mental health sciences, rehabilitation, and emerging technologies, the laboratory develops and translates innovative solutions that address the evolving needs of individuals, communities, and healthcare systems.

Its research agenda combines scientific excellence with technological innovation, focusing on Neuro-Rehabilitation, Immersive Therapies, Mental Health Literacy, Artificial Intelligence for Mental Health, and 3D Health Printing. By integrating human-centred design, evidence-based practice, and digital transformation, the laboratory contributes to the development of next-generation approaches for mental health promotion, rehabilitation, recovery, and social inclusion.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration and translational research, LabRP seeks to shape the future of Digital Mental Health, generating knowledge, technologies, and interventions with measurable scientific, clinical, and societal impact.
